Interception effect
Mechanical interception: The filter element of the Pall Filter has a certain pore size and pore structure. When the fluid passes through the filter element, particles and impurities larger than the pore size of the filter element will be directly intercepted in the surface or internal pores of the filter element, and cannot pass through, so as to achieve filtration. For example, in some high-precision Pall Filters, the pore size of the filter element can be as small as 0.1 microns or even smaller, which can effectively intercept microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses, as well as tiny solid particles.
Surface adsorption interception: The surface of the filter element material has certain physical and chemical properties, and has an adsorption effect on some substances. Some particles or impurities in contact with the surface of the filter element, even if the size is smaller than the pore size of the filter element, may be adsorbed on the surface of the filter element due to van der Waals force, electrostatic attraction, etc., and thus be intercepted. For example, the filter element made of activated carbon has a strong adsorption capacity, which can adsorb organic matter and residual chlorine in water.
Depth filtration
Inertial collision: When the particles in the fluid flow with the fluid, because the particles have a certain mass and inertia, when they encounter the fiber or pore structure inside the filter element, they will deviate from the streamline due to inertia, directly hit the fiber or pore wall of the filter element, and be intercepted. This filtration mechanism is more noticeable when dealing with fluids with larger particles or high flow rates.
Diffusion: For very small particles, such as nanoscale particles or molecules, they do Brownian motion in the fluid. Under the action of Brownian motion, these particles collide with the fibers or pore walls of the filter element and are adsorbed or retained, resulting in filtration. This filtration principle is very effective in removing small impurities from liquids or gases.
Electrostatic action
Electrostatic attraction: Pall Filter's filter material may have a certain charge, and when particles in the fluid have an opposite charge, they will be adsorbed to the filter due to electrostatic attraction. This electrostatic effect can enhance the filtration effect of some tiny particles and charged substances, such as adsorption and removal of impurities such as charged ions and colloids in water.
Electrostatic repulsion: In some cases, the filter material can also be adjusted to carry the same charge as some specific contaminants, thus using electrostatic repulsion to make it difficult for these contaminants to approach the surface of the filter element for screening and filtration. For example, in some Pall Filters for the separation of specific ions or molecules, the principle of electrostatic repulsion is used to separate and filter the target substance.
