Many filter customers have asked me whether air purifiers can help protect against infection and whether their HEPA filtering effectively traps particles of the virus that causes COVID-19.
In theory, the answer is yes, but by July 2020 it is unclear how much practical impact such a machine could have.
Back in April, researchers expressed concern that viruses could be transmitted through the air or in other ways. In early July, a significant number of experts argued in a letter to the WHO for the possibility of airborne transmission of the virus, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began to recognize this possibility.
That’s a key reason HEPA purifiers must not be considered a first line of defense against the COVID-19 virus.
