Working Principle: Filtration and Backwashing
The operation of the shallow sand filter can be divided into two primary states - filtration and backwashing.
Filtration Status:
The shallow sand filter system is composed of several filtration units connected side by side. During the filtration process, unfiltered water is evenly distributed via a unique water distributor. The water flows in a laminar manner through the filler layer composed of refined homogeneous quartz sand. As the water passes through this layer, impurities get trapped. Numerous evenly distributed water collectors at the bottom of the filter collect and draw out the filtered water. This level flow filtration allows the filter to function at high flow rates while maintaining an excellent filtration effect.
Backwashing Status:
As the filler layer accumulates impurities, the internal pressure head loss increases. When the inlet and outlet head loss reaches a preset value, the system automatically activates the differential pressure device, transitioning the system into the backwashing state. This process involves changing the direction of the water supply via a hydraulic valve to facilitate the one-by-one backwashing of the units.
During the backwash state, filtration continues in the units not being backwashed. The filtered clean water is partially used to backwash the standard unit sand cylinders, with the rest being supplied to the user. The backwash effluent is discharged through the backwash drain in the hydraulic valve.
The special collector design in the high-efficiency filtration system for high-speed sand cylinders allows the fillers to be scrubbed against each other, maximizing backwashing efficiency and reducing the amount of backwash water required (clean water), while also preventing material run-off. A standard unit of sand cylinder backwashes for 3 minutes. Once backwashing is completed, the internal pressure head loss in the standard unit of the sand cylinder reduces to a reasonable range, the pressure setting device gives a recovery signal, the hydraulic valve returns to the filter state, and the next standard unit of sand cylinder prepares to enter the backwashing state.
The system can also be controlled by time-based backwashing. The default is set to backwash once every four hours, but this can be adjusted according to the working conditions on site. This dual system control does not have a primary or secondary distinction - whichever comes first will take precedence.
